This year the BSUR welcomed 121 delegates to the 10th annual scientific meeting which was held at the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool. Organised by Dr Jane Belfield (BSUR committee secretary) and Dr Priya Healey (both Consultant Radiologists at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital) the eclectic programme was intended to cover a broad range of topics relevant to our sub-specialist community, with invited faculty from across the UK.
Rather than just a series of didactic lectures the programme was specifically designed to be interactive, this included zealous debating with our urology colleagues on the best treatment of renal tumours, and appropriate timing of nephrostomy placement, as well as case based discussions with our infectious diseases colleagues. This provided a forum to share experiences with each other and our clinicians with whom we work so closely. It proved to be a very valuable learning experience.
The programme also included a scientific session with 5 shortlisted oral presentations based on submitted posters. Congratulations go to Dr Rhiannidd Williams who was awarded the first John Spencer Memorial Prize for best scientific presentation “Can a twist and a turn improve your Renal Biopsy Samples?”. Prizes were also awarded for the best scientific poster which was entitled “MR protocols for imaging gynaecological cancer”. As it was our 10th anniversary the committee invited two of the BSUR founding members Dr Michael Collins and Dr Nigel Cowan to talk about the history and future of urogenital radiology, food for thought in these changing times.
All conference presentations will be uploaded to the members section of the BSUR website for educational reference.
As well as extending thanks to our delegates for making the effort to attend the meeting, the committee would like to thank our kind sponsors, Elsevier Clinical Solutions, Macromed, BK Ultrasound, Gubert, Otsuka, Carestream, Cook Medical, Carefusion, Novartis, St. James’s Place whose support contributed to the huge success of this years meeting.
It was unanimously decided at the BSUR members annual general meeting to change the timing of the meeting next year from November to February. The next BSUR annual scientific meeting will therefore be held in February 2017 and will be hosted by Dr Rob Lavis in Plymouth, please keep an eye out on the website for confirmation of dates.
